The DECAGONE consortium led by ENERTIME proposes a project demonstrating the potential of ORC technology for valorization of waste heat and its conversion to power for the self-consumption of industrial plants at a large industrial scale.
Enertime
Enertime is the coordinator of DECAGONE project.
Since 2008, Enertime has been the manufacturer and supplier of turbo-machinery technologies. ENERTIME assists its customers and industrial partners in the implementation of complex industrial solutions to produce thermal or electrical energy. ENERTIME's ORC machines convert heat into electricity, Heat Pumps produce high temperature heat from lower temperature heat and electricity. Gas expansion turbines recover waste energy from gas distribution networks to produce electricity and cooling.
Enertime coordinates the consortium for technical development of the solution, as well as the general administrative aspects of the project.
At the same time, ENERTIME will actively collaborate with the partners in all the 9 WPs of the project, making a concrete contribution to all the innovations DECAGONE will bring to the ORC sector.
National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)
The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is the oldest and most prestigious technological educational institution of Greece. The Laboratory of Steam Boilers and Thermal Plants (LSBTP) and Laboratory of Thermal Processes (LTP) belong to the School of Mechanical Engineering of the NTUA and are active for over 30 years in the field of energy efficiency and savings.
In the scope of this project, NTUA leads Work Package 7 which involves Technical, economic and environmental assessment of the DECAGONE solutions. Furthermore, NTUA is contributing into the instrumentation and engineering design of the demonstrator.
Université de Liège
The Thermodynamics Laboratory of the University of Liège is conducting numerical and experimental research to develop advanced thermal systems meeting our society needs. Investigated technologies encompass heating and cooling production and storage, distributed power production, electricity storage through thermal processes, waste heat recovery, building energy performance and vehicle thermal management. Since 2005, the Laboratory has been recognized as a leading research group in the field of ORC power systems.
In the Decagone project, the University of Liège is mainly working on the instrumentation of the demonstrator (from sensors selection and positioning to advanced measurements post-processing), on working fluid charge management in the ORC loop and on the dynamic simulation of the system.
Société Tunisienne de l’Electricité et du Gaz (STEG)
The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) is a non-administrative public company (EPNA). Created in 1962, its mission is the production and distribution of electricity and natural gas on the Tunisian territory.
STEG will support the consortium partners to develop requirements and specification to be issued during the consultation phase for a high speed / high power inverter and more generally the balance of plant of the demonstrator to connect it to the local grid. STEG will also study the application of the ORC into isolated sites.
e.mcc energy s.r.o.
The company e.mcc energy s.r.o. is active in the field of engineering and consulting activities. The professions, work experience and personal abilities of the members of our team have been appreciated and respected by clients in the areas of power engineering, thermal power industry, waste recovery and renewable resources.
Role of e.mcc energy s.r.o. within DECAGONE is focused to different engineering activities form complementary site analysis (technical data, lay-out, interfaces with the existing site facilities and technology), Process & Instrumentation Diagram and 3D arrangement of the system and its balance of plant, permits and authorization, procurement up to Demonstrator installation and commissioning management and supervising during its implementation at site.
Energie circulaire
Energie Circulaire, is the energy service company and the subsidiary of Enertime.
Since 2020, Energie Circulaire develops, finances, and operates “turn-key projects” for waste heat recovery from industrial sites in forms of electricity and/or heat.
Energie Circulaire analyzes the innovative third-party financed business models that can be applied to DECAGONE solution at the European scale. In the scope of this project, ENCI provides the feasible business models that suit the requirements of the project. It also supports the consortium partners to exploit the projects’ financial results.
SINTEF Energy Research
SINTEF Energy Research is an institute for applied research dedicated to creating innovative energy solutions. As part of the SINTEF Group, one of Europe's largest independent research organisations, our profits are all invested into infrastructure, equipment, and scientific expertise.
In the DECAGONE project SINTEF Energy Research will, by use of high-fidelity thermodynamic modelling, design and develop an innovative heat recovery system and high-performing heat exchangers meeting the requirements of the demonstration site. The institute will also help validate vendor solutions and analyse test results from the demonstrator.
Technical University of Munich
The Chair of Energy Systems at the TUM has more than 15 years of experience and excellence in organic Rankine Cycle research. It is our mission to improve the efficiency, to increase flexibility and to reduce costs of this technology. TUM has comprehensive experience in power plant dynamics and control optimisation, especially in the field of large-scale thermal power plants, as these are becoming of crucial importance. Beyond conversion technology, TUM investigates also heat sources, such as waste heat, geothermal as well as solid fuel combustion. This includes lab- to pilot-scale experimental facilities, the application of advanced measurement tools and the development of numerical modelling tools.
In Decagone TUM performs simulations for basic and detail engineering. Moreover, it will support the implementation phase as well as the operation of the demonstrator.
Motor Oil
MOH plays a leading role in the Energy Sector in Greece and in the greater Eastern Mediterranean region supplying its customers with a wide range of energy products. The company’s crude oil refinery with its ancillary plants and offsite facilities forms the largest privately held industrial complex in Greece and is considered one of the most modern refineries in Europe. MOH also invests heavily in energy transition and aspires to remain a key player in a low-carbon energy world.
In DECAGONE, MOH will provide its industrial expertise on petrochemical derivative products assessments (like cyclopentane) and ATEX compliance. MOH will also work on adapting ORC technology in the Oil & Gas Sector and create market insight on this market.
PÔLÉNERGIE
Pôlénergie is the regional energy cluster in Hauts-de-France.
Since 2011, Pôlénergie convert energy transition and decarbonization into economic opportunities for companies and territories. Its role is to support the energy sectors in Hauts-de-France from energy producers to consumers both public and private. The structure has developed expertise in energy efficiency, decarbonization, renewable energy, hydrogen, green gas, smart grid and mobility. Our mission is to be a key player in finding innovative solutions, strategic partners, fundings and grants for decarbonization projects. At the same time Pôlénergie is a dedicated tool to promote, communicate and inform about regulation changes, emerging sectors and project realizations.
Haute Ecole Spécialisée de Suisse Occidentale (HESSO)
HES-SO is the largest university of applied sciences (UAS) in Switzerland and the second largest higher education institution of the country. The Laboratory for Energy Systems (LASER) is a center for teaching and research related to energy and conversion technologies. The laboratory conducts theoretical and experimental studies (design, development, characterisation and optimisation) on energy conversion systems.
LASER's main contribution to DECAGONE is the design, test and validation of an innovative cooling system for the hermetic electrical generator (WP4), definition of the instrumentation (WP3) and integration of the cooling performance results in a prediction model (WP7).
ENERGETIKA TŘINEC, a.s.
The principal activities of our company include the production and distribution of energy commodities, predominantly for the metallurgical industry. More precisely, thisit includes electricity, heat in steam and hot water, blast and compressed air and industrial water. We ensures the distribution and treatment of metallurgical heating gas generated in metallurgical production in the parent company TŘINECKÉ ŽELEZÁRNY, a.s. Their utilisation as a secondary source of energy contributes significantly to saving fossil fuels. Our company also supplies heat to the city of Třinec and its surroundings.
As part of the DECAGONE project, an ORC unit (DEMONSTRATOR) will be built, which will use the heat from the flue gas generated during the production of rolled wire in the parent company TŘINECKÉ ŽELEZÁRNY, a.s. (steel companies).
CEA
CEA-Liten is a member of «Institut Carnot Énergies du Futur ». Located at CEA Grenoble and INES (Chambéry) centers, it is dedicated to the energy transition. Its activities focus on several key areas: solar energy, network management, batteries storage and hydrogen in order to improve energy efficiency and circular economy approach. CEA-Liten covers a wide range of applications in energy production and distribution, transportation, industrial processes, and environment markets.
SpinDrive
SpinDrive is Finnish company providing design and production of customer-specific Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) systems for industrial original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
SpinDrive solution increases system efficiency by at least 10%, which enables a 2-year payback time. SpinDrive system is completely maintenance-free, which reduces the overall equipment maintenance costs by 80%. The AMB system doesn’t need lubrication providing completely oil-free solution. SpinDrive reduces customers’ equipment lifecycle costs by 35% and the retrofit solution is possible.

Euronovia
Euronovia is a French consulting company (SME) specialized in supporting EU funded projects with activities related to management and communication and dissemination of project results. Euronovia has also a strong expertise in writing grant applications in response to Horizon Europe call for proposals.
In the Decagone project, Euronovia is leading WP9 dedicated to communication and dissemination activities. Euronovia also assists the coordinator Enertime in the activities related to project management and coordination (WP1).
ARTTIC Innovation GmbH (ARTTIC)
ARTTIC Innovation GmbH is part of the PNO Consultants Group, the European leader in collaboration engineering, consultancy and management services. ARTTIC builds and assists collaborative undertakings and in particular European research consortia and networks from all businesses and research sectors. The service offer of ARTTIC Innovation GmbH comprises provision of hands-on support, strategic consulting, and added value services all along the innovation life cycle. The team has been built since 2006 and has set up and managed numerous projects in EU funding programmes.
ARTTIC will develop and manage the DECAGONE Innovation Community, which will comprise international, leading experts from the scientific community and representatives from key-stakeholder groups. Community members will provide continuous feedback on the project developments and discuss with the project partners the prerequisites and potentials for an industrial uptake of ORC and its replication potentials.
